The Hydrodynamica Test Pilot Series is a collection of surfboards inspired by the work of Bob Simmons in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. They are contemporary interpretations of the Simmons planing hull that have evolved through the Hydrodynamica film project.
Riding a planing hull and discovering its place in surfing’s past and its relevance in the present is a rewarding experience for surfers of all ability levels.
The boards shown here are the result of collaborations between Simmons historian John Elwell, Hydrodynamica project director Richard Kenvin, keel fin craftsman Larry Gephart and shapers Hank Warner, Larry Mabile, and Carl Ekstrom.
The Mini-Simmons has brought Simmons to life for an entire generation of surfers more than five decades after his death.
The Simster was inspired by Simmons’ attempt to build Bev Morgan a short, tri-finned planing hull nearly sixty years ago.
